Beam-induced background

In experimental collider physics, beam-induced background refers to background processes that come from the beams themselves, rather than from controlled collisions at the interaction point or sources unrelated to the beam (cosmic background, detector noise, …).

Mechanisms

An example of a beam-induced background are beam-gas interactions in the beampipe producing muons that travel parallel to the beampipe and hitting the detector.
