Not to be confused with the matrix element method.

The matrix method is a data-driven method for estimating background from misidentified or improperly identified objects.

This method gets a handle of this background by determining transition efficiencies for signatures of objects originating from real and so called fake leptons between two object-level selections with different background rejections and signal efficiencies.
