Reconstruction is the act of going from the raw output of a detector to a description of an event in terms of physical particles, multiparticle systems, and other such high-level objects.

Due to practical limitations of the detector, reconstruction is not perfect, but subject to experimental inefficiencies and resolution effects. Detectors do not cover the full phase space of the produced particles.
